A small removal is a move of a flat, a few rooms of furniture or a single heavy item, rather than a whole house. Jarretts Removals & Storage has been moving people in Norwich and across Norfolk since 1911, from our yard on Waterworks Road, and smaller jobs are part of that work: our online quote tool starts with a “Studio or 1-bed flat” option, and we also move single items such as pianos, snooker tables and fragile equipment.
If you’ve been searching for small removals in Norwich or small removal vans in Norwich, this guide covers what counts as a small move, what we can move for you, what our customers have said about smaller jobs, how pricing works and how to prepare.
What counts as a small removal?
There’s no fixed cut-off, but small removals usually fall into one of these groups:
- A studio or one-bedroom flat. This is the smallest home size on our online quote tool.
- Part of a household. For example, furniture being collected from one place and delivered to family elsewhere.
- A single heavy or awkward item. Pianos, snooker tables and delicate equipment are all things we move on their own.
- Items going into or out of storage. We can collect, store and deliver later.
Whatever the size, the quote is based on the same things: the volume of what’s moving (measured in cubic feet), the distance, access at both ends such as stairs and parking, and any packing you’d like us to do.
What we can move on a smaller job
Small doesn’t always mean simple. Some smaller jobs involve a single piece that is heavy, fragile or valuable. Alongside full house removals, our team moves:
- Pianos and other musical instruments
- Snooker tables
- High-value and fragile items
- Heavy loads and technical equipment
- Small items
We’ve also handled specialist work such as stage sets and props for ITV (formerly Anglia Television), the Theatre Royal and the local BBC, and large equipment at Norwich Cathedral. The same care goes into a one-bed flat: every item is blanketed, strapped and packed, and floors are protected with walk mats on the day.
If you’d rather not take furniture apart yourself, we can dismantle and reassemble beds, wardrobes and other furniture. If you do it yourself, label the parts and keep the fixings together.
Smaller moves our customers have told us about
These are real examples from reviews customers have left for Jarretts on Google and Referenceline.
- A much-loved piano. Anjali J. wrote that the two-person crew who moved her belongings were friendly and efficient, and that everything arrived safely, piano included.
- A fragile piece of equipment. Chris B. described moving a very sensitive, fragile piece of equipment that they’d seen as a challenging job, and said it was handled professionally.
- Furniture for family. Alan D. said Jarretts collected furniture from Yorkshire and delivered it to his children in Norfolk, alongside the family’s own move, with no damage even after the best part of a year in storage.
- A fourth-floor flat with no lift. A December 2024 review on Referenceline describes a move into a fourth-floor flat without a lift, and says the customer couldn’t fault the team.
- A sofa that wouldn’t fit. Janet G. described a crew member working out how to get a very long sofa through her lounge doorway when it looked impossible.
- A daughter’s move. Christine C. said the crew were careful loading and unloading furniture, and that borrowing boxes from Jarretts saved her hunting around for them.
- A two-person team. Maureen S. said her two-man team arrived on time, checked with her throughout and double-checked every room before the van left.
How small removals in Norwich
Every move gets its own quote, worked out from:
- Volume. How much is moving, in cubic feet.
- Distance. Between your old and new address.
- Access. Stairs and parking at both ends.
- Packing. Whether you pack yourself, or want us to pack some or all of it.
We offer a free survey, and the quote we give you is a fixed price. Fuel and congestion charges are included in it. If your street needs a parking permit, arranging it is your responsibility, but we’ll advise on it while we plan the move so there are no surprises.
Underestimating how much you own is easy to do. One customer, Natalie C., wrote that she’d badly underestimated how much she had and hadn’t packed as much as planned, and the crew still loaded and moved everything. Even so, an accurate inventory at the start gives you the most accurate price.
If you need storage in between
Sometimes there’s a gap between moving out and moving in, such as a completion date that slips or a new place that isn’t ready. We offer short- and long-term storage in Norwich, either containerised or conventional.
Each storage container measures 7ft x 5ft x 7ft 6in and holds 250 cubic feet. We bring the container to your home inside our vehicle, wrap your belongings, write an inventory and seal it before taking it back to our Norwich warehouse. There it’s moved by forklift, which keeps handling to a minimum.
Ruth H. told us that after another firm let her down, we stepped in at short notice, moved her belongings, held them while she got sorted and then moved her in.
How to prepare for a small move
- Book early for busy dates. We recommend booking at least 4 to 6 weeks ahead for popular dates such as month-ends and summer weekends. Last-minute moves are possible, but vehicle availability may be more limited.
- Decide what’s coming with you. Moving out is often the best time to work out what you really need. Anything you’re not ready to part with can go into storage.
- Get the right packing materials. We supply boxes, bubble wrap, tape, and clothes and furniture cases, all listed on our packaging materials page. One customer, Lisa A., noted that our packing boxes were fully refundable.
- Label furniture parts. If you’re dismantling anything yourself, label the parts and keep the fixings together.
- Check parking at both ends. Tell us about permits or restrictions early so we can plan around them.
- Give us a full inventory. It’s the basis of your fixed price, so include everything that’s moving.
